Notes
InfoField
  • Title devised by Library staff.
  • Photograph was previously cataloged as being of Private William Holland Liming of Co. A, 34th Mississippi Infantry Regiment, because information from several sources indicated that the soldier was a Confederate by the name of William Liming. The only Confederate soldier named William Liming listed in the Civil War Research Database was William Holland Liming of Co. A, 34th Mississippi Infantry Regiment. In August 2014, it was determined by researchers that the uniforms depicted in the photograph are from a Veteran Reserve Corps regiment. Although there is no William Liming listed in the Civil War Research Database who is associated with a Veteran Reserve Corps regiment, there is a record in Ancestry.com for a soldier by that name in Co. B, 21st U.S. Veteran Reserve Corps Infantry Regiment. An application for a pension, also in Ancestry.com, indicates that he also served in the 71st Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment and that he died in 1927. Another document in Ancestry.com gives his company as N. Furthermore, there is another William Liming listed in both the Civil War Research Database and Ancestry.com who was associated with Co. K, 29th New Jersey Infantry Regiment. These records include a photograph of a soldier who looks very much like the soldier in the Library of Congress photograph. However, no other connection has yet been found between the William Liming who served in Co. B, 21st U.S. Veteran Reserve Corps Infantry Regiment, and the William Liming who served in Co. K, 29th New Jersey Infantry Regiment.
