Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Priory Church, Pamber. At SU608581. Henry le Port founded a Benedictine priory here in the early 12C. It became very wealthy in the 13C. By the 15C it was in decline, and was granted to Eton College by Henry VI. They took possession in 1452, evicted the monks and pulled down the nave and transepts of the priory church and the other priory buildings. The blocked up arches can be seen in the walls of the tower, which would have been originally at the crossing but is now at the west end of the church. In 1462 Edward IV gave the Priory to the Hospital of St Julian, which belonged to Queen's College Oxford. Queen's College have looked after it ever since. In 1475 there was a resident chantry priest, and the inhabitants of Pamber, although in the parish of Monk Sherborne, attended services at the Priory church. When in 1562 the College failed to provide a priest, they were obliged to do so after the local people took legal action. The church has been restored in 1843 and in 1936.
