Description |
English: The flames of Seattle's Great Fire of June 6, 1889 were fanned by the wind and raced through the downtown area. They reached the Post Building in the evening, several hours after the fire started. The inferno completely consumed the business district's wooden buildings, and it gutted the newer brick buildings, leaving their walls standing as dramatic ruins.
This photo shows the front of the Post Building a few days after the fire. The building was built of brick and cast iron, and its outer walls remained standing. The inside of the building, which had housed one of the city's newspapers, was burned completely.
