Summary
[edit]Author |
Willem Van de Velde, the Younger |
Description |
English: Portrait of the 'Brilliant'? 'Brilliant' was a sloop of 6-guns captured from the French by the English in 1696, and sold in 1698, but it is not certain that van de Velde’s drawing shows this vessel. The drawing has part of van de Velde’s signature 'W. V. V. J' (?lower right), and the letter 'S' within a shield, visible on the vessel’s stern, is the collector’s mark of the artist and engraver Johann Gottfried Schumann.(1761-1810). |
