Description
English: Portrait of a Greenwich Pensioner holding a red handkerchief and spectacles, with a copy of the 'Shipping Gazette'

A Greenwich Pensioner in a cocked hat with the brim collapsed, sitting with his left arm resting on a table corner to the viewer's right, with a wooden panelled dado behind as in a tavern or similar room. The braid on his left cuff suggests he may be a Hospital boatswain. The 'Shipping Gazette' lies open on the table beside this and he holds his glasses in his left hand while polishing them with a red handkerchief held in his right. The glasses are picked out in white, the braid and five buttons of the cuff in yellow and the main body of the drawing is in black crayon on a stiff beige laid paper with arched top corners. In the lower left corner is an inverted embossed stamp - perhaps the paper supplier's but with the name unfortunately trimmed off - bearing the address 'Church Street / Spitalfields /London'.
