Summary
[edit]DescriptionPlaaswerkerhuise naby Lüneburg, KZN, a.jpg |
English: A little village of basic farm worker houses near Lüneburg in northern KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. It is one of many such villages or compounds in this region. Every farm in the area has three to four such villages, and they represent a special challenge in terms of social development. It is said that only one to two persons out of every ten in similar villages enjoy steady employment. In earlier years when there was no prescribed minimum wage, the farmers supplied the workers with bags of maize meal and additional food, and in that way all were being cared for. Since the state started to prescribe minimum wages however, it is only those one or two persons per village who receive an income, while the remaining residents can only add government grants to that, should they qualify. They may receive an old age grant, or a child support grant for low income households which amounts to R420 per month (R430 since October 2019) per child, up to the sixth child. This implies an income of R31,000 per annum for women with six children. The population explosion is perhaps the main obstacle to social development in the region. These challenges are the subject of dialogue, reflection and apprisal... |
