If you've ever noticed that there seems to be a relationship between scores with "Pike" in the title and the year 1904, that's because a main feature of the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair was The Pike, an over one mile long promenade through the heart of the fair. "On the Pike" by James Scott, "Hike to the Pike" by Edward Claypoole and several other titles are all referring to the fair's Pike. It's where the expression "coming down the pike" originated. Ida Bierman's only known rag, and quite a good one it is, following up her excellent ragtime intermezzo from 1903 "Laughing Water". Published by W.C. Polla in Chicago in 1904. This piece was also featured in the Nora Hulse CD "Cake Walks, Two Steps and Rags by Women Composers". Thank you to JohnJ1995 for the CD info.
