Description
English: Pier and paddle steamers, Clacton-on-Sea, Essex

Clacton pier was built in 1870-71. Piers provided access to resorts from the sea, allowing passengers to get on and off paddle steamers, like the one seen here. With the development of pier pavilions and theatres from the 1880s, they also became places of entertainment. This pier is advertising hot and cold seawater baths, with separate facilities for ladies and gentlemen. Clacton still attracts day-trippers from London and towns in the south-east, although the large Butlin’s holiday camp there closed in 1983.
