Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Part of the Queensferry Blue Bridge This bascule type bridge used to lift at the centre to allow tall ships to pass underneath. Each half of the bridge would rotate on two quadrants, like the one seen here, counterbalanced by the weight at the top of the photo. Note the slots on the quadrant, which would mesh with the teeth on the horizontal plate, to ensure that the huge structure didn't slip. A wedge has now been welded into the angle to make sure that the bridge can no longer move.
