Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Part of Judds Dykes As part of my assessed geology coursework I had to survey this site, very complicated indeed. This site puzzles even the degree level geologist, however with my A level knowledge and my survey results I will try and give you my theories.

Theory one. The site is surrounded by Permian (or even Triassic) sandstones, dune cross bedding can be seen in the cliffs and caves nearby. I gather that Arran was in Pangaea (the large super continent) at the time. The Permo-Triassic extinction event happened at the time (251 million years ago) with deserts on the continent. This formed the sandstones.

Then in the Tertiary period some 58 million years ago the large northern granite pushed though Arran (creating the northern mountains). This pushed magma up through the sandstone to create a dykes in the area. A dyke is a discordant igneous feature that pushed though beds. There are many types of Magma here, Quartz feldspar porphyry, basalt and dolerite. The site is also faulted and heavily eroded. The rock would have formed deep underground and the country rock has eroded away.
