Summary

[edit]
Description
English: (original photo taken by Jonathan Godt; public domain image provided by the United States Geological Survey)

In geology, landslide events are referred to as mass wasting. There are many specific types of mass wasting including mudflows, debris flows, earth flows, rock falls, debris falls, rock slides, debris slides, lahars, avalanches, solifluction, slump, and creep.

Factors that contribute to landslides include: - loose surface materials - water-saturated soil / bedrock - steep slopes - hillside-conformable discontinuities in bedrock (e.g., joints/faults; bedding planes in structurally-tilted strata)

Seen here is a large landslide that occurred in March 2014 in northwestern Washington State. It temporarily blocked the river, destroyed homes, and covered a stretch of the nearby road.

Locality: Oso Landslide, east of the town of Oso, northwestern far-northern Snohomish County, northwestern Washington State, USA (48° 17’ 07.46" North latitude, 121° 51' 08.20" West longitude)
