Description
English: The orchestrion Violano-Virtuoso is a crafty device wherein several instruments, in this case a violin and a piano, are played mechanically. This instrument was built over 100 years ago by the Mills Novelty Company in Chicago. Because of the invention of the grammofoon and electricity, the manufacturers of mechanical musical boxes saw a demise of their income. However, the clever inventor Henry Sandall, who worked at Mills company, saw a new opportunity in electricity. In 1905, he created a precision mechanic that could imitate a human playing the violin by using an electric motor. This quality could beat the primitive sound qualities of the grammophone. Sandell then expanded the mechanics to also contain piano sound, to create the duo piano and violin: the Violano-Virtuoso. Orchestrions were sold to rich private individuals but also to operators of hotels, restaurants, clubs, music schools, theatres, cinemas, schipping companies, railway companies and even churches. The instruments saved the expense for hiring real life musicians and the investment that had to be made could be earned back by the build-in coin dispenser. Mills sold over 4500 Violan’s in twenty years, of which a couple of hunderds still remain. The instrument is made of oak and various other materials.
