Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Old headstones in Maxton Churchyard Both of these headstones show typical 17th and 18th century emblems of mortality with the death's head, crossed bones and hour-glass in a horizontal position. The skull symbol was used to represent Death, a reminder that death comes to everyone, as indicated by the words, Memento Mori, meaning "Remember that you must die". The hour-glass indicates the passing of time and it is thought that when the hour-glass is shown horizontally it indicates that time has run out for the departed, but when it stands upright, it indicates time is running out for the passerby. The stone on the right also displays an emblem of immortality, the winged soul, representing the human spirit leaving the body and arising.
