[edit]DescriptionNowers Monument.jpg |
English: effigy possibly representing John de Nowers in Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, England. From: 'Christ Church', in An Inventory of the Historical Monuments in the City of Oxford (London, 1939), pp. 29-48. http://www.british-history.ac.uk/rchme/oxon/pp29-48 : In E. aisle of N. transept—S. of Latin Chapel, (5) ascribed to Sir George Nowers, early 15th-century, stone altar-tomb and effigy, altar-tomb with five round quatre-foiled panels on each side and one at each end all enclosing shields with repainted arms on S. side and W. end only. Nowers arms: Three garbs or (as sculpted on his surcoat). (a) a cheveron between three leaping greyhounds impaling Darcy, (b) the same impaling d'Amory (Amory), (c) the same alone, (d) the same impaling Basset, (e) the same impaling Lucy, and on W. end (f) Nowers impaling the first coat; effigy (Plate 95) (partly of alabaster but mostly repaired in 17th or 18th century) in bascinet, camail, jupon, etc., head on helm with bull's head crest, feet on lion, remains of arms of Nowers on jupon, figure does not fit altar-tomb and is said to have been brought from Tackley;
See also "Is this the Tomb of Sir Henry de Bathe?" http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~bathonia/genealogy/HenrydeBatheTomb.htm The armour is comparable to that of the Black Prince, who died in 1376. The base and effigy do not match. Probably the effigy of Sir George Nowers (Latinised as de Nodariis), (died 1425). Not of Sir Henry de Bathe, Sheriff of Yorkshire from 1242 to 1248 and a senior justice of the King's Bench. Though he fell from favour in 1251 he was restored in 1253 and continued his service to the crown until his death in early 1261. Arms of family unknown: Argent, a chevron between three greyhounds rampant one in base and two combatant in chief sable. This is an unusual depiction, identical save in tinctures to the arms of French family of Essaux from Champagne.Français : Monument représentant John de Nowers à la Cathédrale de Christ Church, Oxford, Angleterre |
