[edit]DescriptionNorthSide KirkhamChantryScreen PaigntonChurch Devon3.xcf |
English: North side of the Kirkham Chantry Screen, viewed from inside the nave of the church, looking southwards. Late 15th c., Church of St John The Baptist, Paignton, Devon. Sculpted in stone. Three Tudor-arches pierce the structure, the central one being the entrance. Two chest-tombs in the openings on either side, each with recumbent effigies of a knight and his lady, less than life size. Arched soffits with fan-vaulting and pendentives. Crowning pinnacles on top. All profusely decorated with small sculpted figures. (per: Pevsner, Nikolaus & Cherry, Bridget, The Buildings of England: Devon, London, 2004, p.838). Visible through the left opening is the monument with kneeling effigies of Sir William Kirkham (d.1623) of Blagdon in the parish of Paignton. He married (as his second wife) Mary Tichbourne (d.1627), a daughter of Peter Tichbourne of Hampshire and a sister of Chidiock Tichbourne (1562-1586), conspirator and poet. Kneeling effigy, dressed in armour with neck-ruff and bareheaded. |
