Notes
  • Significance: This small vernacular house is one of the few 19th century board and batten houses remaining in Charlottesville. It appears to have been a two-family dwelling of c. 1840, situated on the site of a farm on the outskirts of the town. / Cynthia T. Norris inherited a farm on the outskirts of Charlottesville from her father John Kelly in 1830. Following 1840 this small four room dwelling was probably built for tenant farmer use. Thomas and Anna Preston purchased a 102 1/4-acre tract of the farm in 1863, and this house may have been servant quarters for the Preston estate, called Wyndhurst. This structure has undergone numerous changes and additions and is one of the few old board and batten houses remaining in the city.
  • Unprocessed Field note material exists for this structure: FN-259
  • Survey number: HABS VA-1075
  • Building/structure dates: ca. 1840 Initial Construction
