English: Shown here is The Isthmus of Palu, more commonly the "Neck" of Sulawesi. The Isthmus of Palu is a narrow strip of land that connects the northern and southern parts of the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. It is located in the central part of the island, stretching from the city of Palu in the west to the Gulf of Tolo in the east.
Geographically, the Isthmus of Palu is characterized by a series of rugged mountains and hills that run along its length. These include the impressive Palu-Koro Fault, a major geological feature that runs the entire length of the isthmus and is responsible for the frequent earthquakes in the region. The isthmus is also home to a number of important rivers, including the Palu River, which flows through the city of Palu and is a vital source of water and irrigation for the surrounding region. The region is also known for its numerous lakes, such as Lake Poso and Lake Lindu, which are popular tourist destinations. Due to its unique location, the Isthmus of Palu is a critical transportation hub for the island of Sulawesi, with major highways and railways running through the region. It is also home to the Palu Mutiara Airport, which serves as a major gateway to the island. Despite its strategic importance, the Isthmus of Palu is a region that is vulnerable to natural disasters, particularly earthquakes and landslides.
