English: Naufrage du Vaisseau le Superbe dans le port de Paskia, ile de Paros le 15 Decembre 1833 Plate No.4. Lithograph. Monochrome print showing the bow and starboard beam of the French ship, Superbe (1814), in danger of breaking up on rocks during a storm off the island of Paros. Only the foremast remains upright, the other masts having fallen back and the the bowsprit splintered. High waves batter the listing hull and the few remaining sails fly in tatters in the wind, most having been stripped from the yards. The stern is submerged and an anchor chain secures the bow. Figures are shown crowded on the foredeck holding on to the broken stem of the bowsprit. A lifeboat is being launched over the side of the ship. Semi-submerged rocks and the hills of the coast can be seen through the mist in the background. |
