Summary
[edit]DescriptionNakamichi 1000ZXL (black) drawing.svg |
English: Nakamichi 1000ZXL cassette deck, 1979-1985. The original 1000ZXL, mechanically based on the 1973 Nakamichi 1000 but very different in electronics and function set, was a top-of-the-line, halo model introduced in 1979. At 3800 dollars list price [1] it was arguably the most expensive cassette recorder on the American market. The Swiss-made Studers could reach this mark too - depending on exchange rates. As if this wasn't enough, in 1981 Nakamichi released the 1000ZXL Limited version in gold, setting the all-time record of 6000 USD (list price). This roughly equalled the price of an American-made economy car like Chevy Citation or Dodge Colt. Both versions, black and gold, remained in Nakamichi's catalogue until 1985, and were replaced as company's flagships by the far less expensive Dragon. It may not be obvious, but not only is the 1000ZXL taller than a typical cassette deck (264 mm tall), it is also much wider - 527 mm with wooden cabinet, or fit for 19-inch rack mount without it. And it weighs "only" 19.5 kg in gold or 19.0 kg in black. |
