Summary
[edit]DescriptionNRCSSD01036 - South Dakota (6091)(NRCS Photo Gallery).tif | NRCS conservationists and conservation partners worked with a landowner to restore Long Lake in eastern South Dakota. Higher than normal rainfall during the 1990s increased the inflow into the lake which in turn raised the lake's water level. The increased pressure on the outlet caused erosion which could have potentially drained part of the lake. NRCS and partners installed an engineering practice, a gabion weir structure, to stop the erosion of the channel at the outlet of the lake and restoring the lake to previous water levels. Long Lake provides excellent habitat for waterfowl, upland game and other wildlife in the prairie pothole region. | ||||
