内題は『文昌帝君陰隲文(ぶんしょうていくんいんしつもん[ぶん])』。宝永5年(戊子年[1708])に刊行された『陰隲文』と、享保6年(1721)7月刊の通俗化された(和文に翻訳すること)された『通俗陰隲文』とを併せ写したもの。『文昌帝君陰隲文』は『太上感応編』『覚世真経』と合せて中国の民衆道徳を説いた勧善書とも呼ばれる善書で、明末を代表する道教経典となっており、日本では幕末から明治初めにかけて流布した。文昌帝君は学問や功名、禄籍を司る神で、現在も中国・台湾では例年多くの受験生と親が参拝して合格祈願を行っている。口絵に描かれる像は「文魁」や「魁星」と呼ばれ、振り上げた右手の赤い筆が上位の成績を象徴し、後ろに蹴り上げた左足と、鰲魚の頭を踏む右足には、試験が順調に運び、首位で合格することへの願いが込められた絵だが、日本ではこれを文昌帝君像とする口絵が多く、学問ではなく善根による応報を説く内容が付加されたものが多い。(相田満)(2018.11)
