金魚飼育書の初出版だが、著者・増補者は堺の人としかわからない。本文は金魚の渡来から始まり、尾形など形状の説明、飼育・繁殖の方法、病気と治療など、基礎的なことを記し、当時輸入されて間もないランチュウについても触れる。本資料は初版本だが、流布しているのは後刷の無刊記本と弘化3年(1846)本で、当館も計7点所蔵する。そのうち、『金魚そだて草』(199-150)には、『[後編]金魚秘訣録』(折本)が貼り込まれている。この『秘訣録』は稀本だが、内容は前編の追補にすぎない。『金魚養玩草』は、金魚の初渡来を元亀2年(1571)とするが、それを裏付ける同時代資料は無く、実際には元和2年(1616)頃に初めて中国から持ち込まれたらしい。(磯野直秀)
