享保5年(1720)8月3日竹本座初演、近松門左衛門作の時代物浄瑠璃。能の「隅田川」「班女」の世界を取り入れた吉田家のお家騒動物で、班女御前の双子の息子、梅若・松若が登場する。吉田家から金を掠め取って失踪した過去を悔やみ、返金のため悪事を働く人商人(ひとあきびと)の猿島惣太が、それとは知らず、主君の若君である梅若を10両で売ろうとし、ついには殺してしまうという、因果応報が描かれた秀作である。江戸時代後期からは上演が途絶えていたが、昭和48年(1973)9月、国立劇場において、猿島惣太が登場する場面を含む、一部の復活上演が行われた。掲出本は、大坂・京・江戸の複数の書肆による再版本。新日本古典文学大系92『近松浄瑠璃集』下(岩波書店、1995)に、本作の翻刻・校注がある。(田草川みずき)(2020.2)
