正本屋山本九兵衛(京都)、山本九右衛門(大坂)刊の浄瑠璃正本。全43丁。原表紙・原題簽を残し、題簽には「天の網島 竹本筑後掾直伝/山本九兵衛新板」とある。内題は「紙屋治兵衛/きいの国や小はる□□天の網島 作者 近松門左衛門」だが、□□の空格は、本来の作品名「心中天の網島」にある「心中」の2字を、元の板木から削除したことを示す。心中の市中流行を受け、徳川幕府は享保7年(1722)から翌8年にかけて、心中を扱う演劇や文学の禁止令を出していた。掲出本の「心中」の2字の削除は、この禁止令をかいくぐり、同作の出版を行う苦肉の策であったと考えられている。近松門左衛門作「心中天の網島」は、享保5年(1720)12月6日、大坂・竹本座初演。同年10月、大坂・網島の大長寺で起こった心中事件を題材とする。妻子のいる紙屋治兵衛と遊女・小春の恋に、治兵衛の妻・おさんや、兄・孫右衛門などが絡む、近松晩年の心中物。小春とおさんの「女同士の義理」が描かれ、小春は心中に際してこの「女同士の義理」を思い、治兵衛と別々の場所で死ぬことを望む。初演以来、「置土産今織上布」「天網島時雨炬燵」等の改作物を生み、それぞれ好評を得て歌舞伎でも上演されたが、今日では近松の原作である「心中天の網島」としての上演が主流となっている。(田草川みずき)(2022.2)
