Summary
[edit]DescriptionMuralBrass EdmundTame Died1534 FairfordChurch Gloucestershire.xcf |
English: Mural monumental brass on north wall of St Mary's parish church, Fairford, Gloucestershire, to Sir Edmund Tame (died 1534) of Beauchamp's Court, Fairford. On his tabard are shown the arms of Tame: Argent, a dragon vert and a lion azure crowned gules combatant. Behind him kneels his son. In front of him is his first wife Agnes Greville, with Tame and Greville arms (Sable, on a cross engrailed or five pellets a bordure engrailed of the second) embroidered on her mantle; behind her kneel her three daughters, behind whom kneels Elizabeth Tyringham, Tame's second wife, with Tame and Tyringham arms (A saltire engrailed) embroidered on her mantle. The Latin inscription is as follows: Hic jacent Edmundus Tame miles et Agnes et Elizabet uxores eius qui quidem Edmundus obiit primo die Octobris An(no) D(o)m(ino) MVcXXXIIII et An(n)o
regni Regis Henrici Octavi vicesimo sexto. (? Quorum animae propitietur deus amen ?). ("Here lie Edmund Tame, Knight, and Agnes and Elizabeth his wives, which certain Edmund died on the first day of October in the year of our Lord 1534 and in the 26th year of the reign of King Henry the Eighth. May the lord look on their souls with favour"). The two shields above show the arms of Tame impaling Greville and Tame impaling Tyringham. Another large and magnificent brass to Edmund Tame and his two wives lies on the floor of the aisle in front of this small mural brass. See image ![]() |
