Summary
[edit]DescriptionMouth of the River Arun - geograph.org.uk - 734504.jpg |
English: Mouth of the River Arun Viewed from West Beach car park at low tide. The mouth was cut in 1733 after a sand spit had deflected the opening eastwards along what is now Littlehampton Beach. The embankment on the western side was built up further in 1796 which contributed to the formation of the sand dunes on West Beach. The sand bars at low tide were low enough to allow carts to ford the river via the beach which until the construction of Ferry Road in 1824 was the only route to the port for the nearby villages of Climping and Ford. |
