English: This movie shows actual hand kinematics for the 3D center-out with rotation task in the virtual reality simulator, as well as simultaneous recording of spikes for a motor cortical neuron that encodes both hand translation and rotation in a nonlinear fashion. The subject's 3D hand position and hand orientation in the frontal plane were mapped directly to the position and orientation of the orange cursor in the virtual reality simulator. The preferred translational direction of this neuron is right, backward, and up. It prefers counter-clockwise rotation. This movie shows a subset (12 movements) of this neuron’s data. In the actual experiment, all movements were performed in random order. In this movie, those movements were reordered so that all three movements with the same translation direction but different rotations were grouped together.
