long section: Zea mays magnification: 100x <a href="http://blogs.berkshirecc.edu/bccoer" rel="nofollow">Berkshire Community College Bioscience Image Library</a> A narrow, single layerd and heavily cutinized epidermis overlies several layers of heavy walled red stainig sclerenchyma. The cortical region is composed entirely of loosely packed thin walled parenchyma and intercellular spaces. Unlike most grasses Zea stems are not hollow at the center. Vascular bundles are scattered throughout the cortex with numerous small bundles crowded nearly the periphery of the stem and fewer larger bundles towards the center of the stem. Vascular bundles are wrapped in heavy walled red staining sclerenchyma.. A single layer of pale bundle sheath cells may visible. Phloem consists of large green staining sieve tubes and smaller companion cells. Large and small xylem vessels are present |
