Description
English: This true-color image of Hurricane Maria was captured on the afternoon of September 19, 2017 at 1:45 P.M. CDT (17:45 UTC), by the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) instrument flying aboard the preliminary GOES 16 satellite launched by NOAA and NASA in November 2016. Maria was a tropical system that originated from the Main Development Region in mid-September 2017. It would go on to devastate the U.S. Territory of Puerto Rico and its surroundings later on the same day when this image is taken into the next day. At the time this was captured Maria moving northwest across the Caribbean Sea heading toward Puerto Rico as a Category 5 Major Hurricane with winds of 165 mph (266 km/h) (145 knots) on the 1-min Saffir-Simpson scale and a minimum central pressure of 920 mbar (27.2 inHg).
