English: This true-color image of Hurricane Maria was captured on the afternoon of September 18, 2017, at 3:30 P.M. Martinique Local Time (19:30 UTC), by the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) instrument flying aboard the preliminary GOES 16 satellite launched by NOAA and NASA in November 2016. When this image was captured, Maria was rapidly intensifying as a Category 3 major hurricane. The intensity of this storm when this image was acquired was maximum sustained winds of 125 mph (201 km/h) (110 knots) on the 1-min Saffir-Simpson scale and an estimated minimum central pressure of 950 mbar (28.1 inHg). |
