Description
English: The first European to enter this area was Hernán Cortés while on his march from Veracruz, Mexico to the Gulf of Honduras. The conquest of the Maya Indians began in Yucatán in 1526 by Francisco de Montejo and completed in 1697 by Martín de Úrsula with the capture of the island captial Tayasal (Flores). This topographic map was prepared especially to determine the location of the capital and the shoreline of the lake as it existed at the time of the conquest. Guatemala. 1923.
