Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Malcolm's Cross, Denwick, Northumberland.

A Gothic Revival stone cross in a clearing a few yards east of the B6341 road north of Alnwick, erected in 1774 in memory of Malcolm III, King of Scotland, who was mortally wounded at the Battle of Alnwick on 13 November 1093. Just west of the cross is the square stone base of a Medieval cross, with a fragment of its stone shaft still in its socket.

The 18th-century cross is carved from grey sandstone. It comprises an open-centred bracelet cross head with curved foliate ends, standing on a tapering square shaft with festoons and grotesque heads at the top and hollow chamfered corners ornamented with dog-tooth. The shaft stands on a carved square pedestal, bedded onto on a stepped stone base and has a considerable amount of historic graffiti, some dated 1799. The pedestal is panelled, with a crowned thistle on the north side and the arms of Scotland bordered by thistles on the south. The east and west sides have inscriptions recording Malcolm III's death in 1093 and the cross's restoration in 1774 at the behest of Elizabeth Seymour, 1st Duchess of Northumberland, whose family counted Malcolm as an ancestor.
