Summary
[edit]DescriptionMaastricht, Sint-Servaasbasiliek, vieringcrypte, sarcofaag 03.jpg |
English: View of a stone reliquary chest in the vieringscrypte ("crossing crypt"), one of four crypts in the Basilica of Saint Servatius in Maastricht, the Netherland. The burrial chest is probably of late-Roman origin (4th c?); the paintwork is Medieval. It was originally used to contain the relics of four holy bishops of Tongeren and Maastricht (Candidus, Gondulph, Valentinus and Monulph), who are depicted on the chest in that order. In 1039, when the present church was dedicated with the emperor present, it was placed on Saint Peter's altar in the East Crypt (next door). In the 12th century the relics were placed in gilded reliquaries on the high altar and the chest was moved to its present location. |
