Summary
[edit]DescriptionMaastricht, Sint-Servaasbasiliek, Oostcrypte, fragmenten gotisch doksaal 04.jpg |
English: Fragment of a former Gothic rood screen, now in the East Crypt lapidarium of the Basilica of Saint Servatius in Maastricht, the Netherlands. The rood screen (doksaal), sculpted around 1300 of local limestone, once stood in front of the east choir, where it seperated the area reserved for the canons from the public areas of the church. It depicted scenes from the life of Saint Servatius, the patron saint of the church, but its exact shape is unknown. This fragment shows a man with uplifted arms. In front of the screen stood an altar with a life-size statue of the saint. The screen was demolished in 1732 and fragments were burried underneath the church floor, where they were discovered in 1915. |
