Description

Nederlands: Voordat Christus werd gekruisigd, werd hij op bevel van Pilatus gegeseld. De gebeurtenis wordt door de vier evangelisten slechts kort vermeld (Matt. 27:26; Marcus 15:25; Lucas 23:16, 22; Joh. 19:1). Het grote aantal voorstellingen in de beeldende kunst is wellicht te verklaren aan de hand van latere christelijke schrijvers, die veel aandacht aan de geseling schonken en veelal uitwijdden over de hoeveelheid slagen die Christus op zijn rug zou hebben ontvangen. Christus is, in profiel weergegeven, vastgebonden aan de geselkolom. Aan weerzijden staan beulen, die zijn naakte lichaam afranselen met roedes en zwepen. De voorstelling gaat terug op Dürers Geseling van de Grote Passie (1512).
