Vrouwen zitten in het midden van de kerk op losse stoeltjes. Zij nemen die speciaal voor de kerkdienst mee. De mannen bevinden zich in de banken. In de zeventiende eeuw zijn meer vrouwen dan mannen lidmaat van de officiële, gereformeerde kerk. Of zij hun kinderen de borst geven in het koude kerkgebouw, zoals op dit schilderij is afgebeeld, is de vraag. Hier wordt namelijk verwezen naar een bijbeltekst: 1 Petrus 2. De kerkgangers dienen Gods woord als ‘moedermelk’ tot zich te nemen.
