Kledingspelden, ook wel fibulae of fibula’s genoemd, worden in de Oudheid gebruikt om mantels en andere kledingstukken op de schouder te bevestigen. De fibula is een voorloper van de sluitspeld en van de knoop, een dertiende-eeuwse uitvinding. Tot in de vroege Middeleeuwen gebruiken mannen en vrouwen deze spelden om hun kleding bijeen te houden. De hier getoonde Romeinse speld, een drieknoppenfibula, is een typische mannenspeld die in de laatromeinse tijd in het leger populair was. Hij is heel geschikt om de zware soldatenmantel te sluiten.

Fibulae zijn niet alleen functioneel, ze hebben ook een decoratieve waarde en worden als statussymbool gebruikt. Sommige zijn rijk versierd en van goud of verguld brons gemaakt. Vanaf de late vierde eeuw worden de spelden niet alleen met geometrische patronen maar ook met christelijke symbolen verfraaid.
