English: András and I are on the way to my grandparents country in Ljubljana, Slovenia. This was a bit emotional for me. When growing up, I knew nothing about my grandparents. Frank Gerbic was born in 1864 and Mary Skufka (no idea if that is the correct spelling) was born in 1880ish. Frank came to America in 1880's and Mary was many years later.
My father spoke Slovenia all his childhood, but then was encouraged to assimilate in high school so he would not be teased. By the time he got back from WWII he had forgotten most of the language. I only learned macka (with a v on top of the c) which means cat. Slovenia always seemed so far away and exotic. The idea of actually going there was the thoughts of a raving dreamer. My father would have been so excited. I wish I believed in life after death and that he could be watching my life right now. sigh Anyway, Andras and I met up with the Slovenian Skeptics for a beautiful lunch alongside the river. Mark Bizmar, Maja Žorga Dulmin and Nejc Žorga Dulmin looking forward to keeping in touch with them and visiting Ljubljana again. |
