Description
English: Lijiang (丽江), located in the northwest of Yunnan Province (云南省), China, is a prefecture-level city known for its rich history and cultural heritage. With an area of 21,219 square kilometers and a population of 1,253,878 as of the 2020 census, Lijiang boasts a diverse landscape that includes the UNESCO Heritage Site, the Old Town of Lijiang. This ancient town is celebrated for its unique historical architecture and an intricate ancient water-supply system.

The region has been a hub of human activity since as far back as 100,000 years ago, with evidence of late Paleolithic people in the area. Lijiang's history is marked by its role as a political, commercial, and cultural center for the local Naxi people (纳西族) and other ethnic groups, particularly during the period from 658 AD to 1107 AD in the Baisha Old Town. The area was also a crucial part of the Ancient Southern Silk Road, facilitating trade and cultural exchanges between Burma, Tibet, and the Mediterranean Sea.

Throughout its history, Lijiang has been under the influence of various dynasties, including the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, with the Naxi ruling house of the Mu family (木氏家族) playing a significant role in its governance. The city's strategic location and cultural significance have contributed to its status as a key center of trade and culture in southwest China.

Lijiang's geography is characterized by its position within the Hengduan Mountains, where the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau converge, offering a mild subtropical highland climate. The city is a melting pot of ethnic diversity, with the Naxi people forming the majority of its population, alongside Yi (彝族), Lisu (傈僳族), Bai (白族), Pumi (普米族), and other minority groups.

The Old Town of Lijiang, Lugu Lake (泸沽湖), and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (玉龙雪山) are among its major tourist attractions, drawing visitors with their natural beauty and cultural significance.

In summary, Lijiang (丽江) is a city that embodies the rich cultural heritage and natural beauty of Yunnan Province, making it a significant destination for both historical and ecological tourism.
