[edit]DescriptionLaying the Foundations of the KPNO 2 1-meter Telescope (05283-CC).tiff |
English: The construction team prepares the foundations of the KPNO 2.1-meter Telescope (then known as the 84-inch Telescope) at Kitt Peak National Observatory. Likely taken in the early 1960s, this image captures the earliest stages of the telescope that would eventually open up one of the biggest mysteries in astronomy: the puzzle of dark matter. Only a few years after this telescope saw first light in September 1963, astronomers Vera Rubin and Kent Ford used it to make the landmark observation that the Andromeda Galaxy has much more mass in its edges than expected. This suggested the presence of some kind of 'missing mass' now known as 'dark matter,' an enduring mystery that is yet to be resolved. |
