Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Langham House 18th century. The footpath stays defiantly outside the wall. In the 19th century this property was known as 'Road Hill House'. On the night of 29/30 June 1860 a three year old boy was taken from the house and murdered in the grounds. The body was discovered soon after in a privy. The child was a son of the householder and the murderer had to have been one of the other residents there, a brother, sister, parent or servant. A book has been published on the circumstances and investigation of the murder, 'The Suspicions of Mr Whicher' by Kate Summerscale. Thanks to Brian Marshall for this information.
