Lady Bird Johnson Home Movies, Home Movie #14: LBJ's 1948 Senate Campaign. Footage of Lyndon Johnson campaigning for the Senate in 1948. This is a silent, black and white film. Following is a scene by scene description, courtesy of the Audio Visual Archives at LBJ Library. This film opens with LBJ campaigning in Burnet and Burleson(?) counties during 1948(?) [See also HM 5] A group of men wait for a political rally. Four band members stand next to cars. Men and women wait for the rally. Sam Houston Johnson talks to men. Parked speaker cars and people wait for the rally. Sam Houston Johnson, Rebekah Baines Johnson, and Lucia Johnson pose by a car. An unidentified man wears an LBJ shirt near a car with a "Burnet County 4 to 1 Johnson" sign. The camera sweeps over other cars with pro-LBJ signs. Next we see LBJ campaigning in an unidentified location. John Connally(?) speaks at a podium, while Lyndon and Lady Bird Johnson sit on the stage listening. Unidentified men and Johnson's mother, Rebekah Baines Johnson, listen to LBJ speaking. LBJ addresses the audience with a microphone. The camera shows views of the crowd listening to LBJ. John Connally smiles and listens to LBJ. LBJ hugs an unidentified man (under & overexposed). Mrs. Johnson votes(?) in a courthouse. LBJ talks with a microphone. A crowd listens. An unidentified man (LBJ?) hands out something to people, mostly children. The next section of this film features LBJ at the Municipal Auditorium in an unknown city [See also Home Movie #5]. We see a building labeled "Municipal Auditorium" with a sign advertising "Peg O' My Heart" and, beneath that, a "Lyndon Johnson and All Star Revue, Tonite, 8pm" sign. An unidentified woman sings on stage with a flag waving. An unidentified woman sings; a man addresses the crowd. Then LBJ is on stage, putting on lavalier microphone. The crowd listens to LBJ as he addresses the people. We see another "Lyndon Johnson All Star Revue, Municipal Auditorium" sign. LBJ speaks to the crowd (underexposed). The crowd listens to LBJ. LBJ speaks with a lavalier microphone. An unidentified woman plays an accordion. Four young men sing. There is an LBJ poster (underexposed). Men and women sing with the crowd listening. Next we cut to LBJ talking with staff members and friends; some scenes of Coke Stevenson greeting people. Unidentified men talk (overexposed). Coke Stevenson talks to people. Unidentified men talk. LBJ talks with people (grainy). Unidentified men address a group in a room. LBJ addresses the above group (washed out). LBJ talks in a shirt and tie. Staff members? and Mary Rather eat. The next section shows LBJ campaigning and voting. An unidentified man speaks from a podium. LBJ speaks from the podium. LBJ, in a hat, shakes hands with people. Various unidentifiable men stand in the room. LBJ talks with a group of men. Lady Bird Johnson greets people. LBJ talks with men. A group of people count ballots(?). LBJ sits and fills out a ballot? We see a view of a ballot box. LBJ and others leave the courthouse. Then we see a view of a co-op building. The following section features Luci Johnson and friends eating and playing. Luci eats and plays in a high chair. Three unidentified children pose and play with Luci play.
