Lady Bird Johnson Home Movies, Home Movie 17, Footage of D.C., Austin and LBJ Ranch in 1943. This is a silent, black and white film. The first part of the movie features LBJ and Lady Bird with staff members in Washington, D.C. in the 1940s. We see the United States Capitol building, and Lyndon Johnson, John Connally, Walter Jenkins and three other staff members by the Capitol. Then Lady Bird and LBJ stand near the Capitol and walk towards the camera. The next part shows footage of a Military performance inside an arena, maybe in D.C.? Soldiers ride horses around the arena and World War I tanks fire weapons. The following scenes show LBJ and Mrs. Johnson with Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Wirtz, maybe in Washington? Next we see Lady Bird visiting various Washington monuments in the snow. There are snow scenes of hills and a highway followed by a view of the Washington Monument. Next Lady Bird walks down the steps in front of the Lincoln Memorial, and then Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and Cemetery. Next we see Lady Bird visiting with Walter Jenkins and an unidentified man in front of a building. The next scenes are of the Johnson family at the ranch in maybe 1955? Similar footage can also be seen in Home Movie #5. The first ranch footage is a view of the outside of the house, then LBJ sitting in chair with Lady Bird, Lynda, and joined by a beagle. LBJ examines mail next to his mother, Rebekah Baines Johnson, as well as Mrs. Johnson, Luci, Lynda and the beagle. Another shot follows of LBJ lying down and reading the mail. The next section features some of Lyndon Johnson's staff in Austin. Similar footage can be seen in Home Movie #18. We see Walter Jenkins sitting behind a desk, unidentified women staff members in the office, J.C. Kellam talking in the office, John Connally talking on the phone, other unidentified staff members and friends in the office, and Sam Houston sitting and talking in the office. |
