Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Illustration from folio 66 recto of Codex Mendoza, a 16th-century Mexican manuscript depicting the life, art and history of the Mexica, otherwise known as the Aztecs. It depicts the execution of a rebellious cacique (indigenous ruler of a city), overseen by a Huiznahuatl officer, seen at the left hand side of the picture, who may have served as a judge during the trial or witness for the execution. The execution is being performed via strangulation with a rope by two executioners. The cacique's wife and son, depicted at the right hand side, were captured and ensalved, as the text and illustrations show. Both are wearing a collar of servitude (cuauhcozcatl) and the son, below the wife, is depicted with his hands tied together.
