Nederlands: Kinderen der zeeJozef Israëls was een van de belangrijkste schilders van de romantiek. Van de vele visserskinderen die hij schilderde, is deze voorstelling het vroegst bekende voorbeeld. Het thema van de eenvoudige ‘kinderen der zee’ deed het zeer goed bij verzamelaars. Van Eeghen kocht dit doek waarschijnlijk reeds in het jaar van ontstaan; nog in 1863 werd het tentoongesteld in Amsterdam. Vier jaar later kreeg het goede kritieken op de Wereldtentoonstelling in Parijs, waar Israëls met vijf werken was vertegenwoordigd.
