Description

English: Shot in 1896, this is considered one of the first films made in Mexico, with the 'Cinématographe Lumière' system, without sound, and by the hands of Gabriel Antoine Veyre (1871-1936) and Claude Ferdinand Bon Bernard (?). Both were in Mexico as envoys of Br. Lumiere, at the invitation of the Mexican government and promoting the new invention, during his stay in Mexico they filmed some 35 short documentaries.

Under an invitation from the Cuesta Gallardo family to visit their property on the Atequiza ranch, near Lake Chapala, in central-western Mexico, both Frenchmen produced a series of films on "rural" Mexican life.

This is the oldest film about a Mexican dance: El "Jarabe tapatío", shows a couple dancing without touching; In the background a banana plantation; Dancing a music of "son" accompanied by voice, viola and harp, by "mariachis", along with other witnesses. At the end, someone from among those attending the show is invited to come out on stage and they are thanked with applause.
