Summary
[edit]DescriptionJapanese Knotweed (leaves) - geograph.org.uk - 905628.jpg |
English: Japanese Knotweed (leaves). This shows the leaves and flower buds of the Japanese knotweed at the side of a bridle path with a 20p coin for scale. It is spreading rapidly through Britain due to man's activities. It damages buildings, roads, river banks, archaeological sites and much more. It increases soil erosion , clogs water works, reduces access, is very difficult and expensive to eradicate and it is here now! Have you got any near you?

This image has currency in it to indicate scale.
Using coins for scale is discouraged as it will require people unfamiliar with them to look up the dimensions or guess, both of which defeat the purpose of the object in the first place. Coins can also reinforce a geographical bias, and some coins' designs are copyrighted. Ideally, a photograph should include a ruler with the subject (example) or an added scale marking. SI ("metric") units are the most commonly used worldwide (see meter and centimeter). Images with coins to indicate scaleCommon coin diameters for reference:
