English: On front of document: “Erie County town of Buffalow stat of new york
Black Rock April 9th 1824 Direct it to Black Rock post office
Mr Hunt I now take this present opportunity to inform you that I am well at present and hope that these few lines will find you in the same state of health I wish you would send my wife a letter when you receive this and inform her that I am well and Where I Be and when I will be home to see her I have traveled through a good part of Canada and now I am at Black Rock and am at work there at Mr Seth Hawleys store and dwelling house wages is only midling But work enough to Do and tell my wife that she must go to John Pickels and stay till Fall if she Dont like to stay where she is and then I will Be home And satisfy them for all there trouble and exspence and So no more at present But still Remain your Affecton Friend James Burk Mr Hunt
and what I owe you I will Pay you when I come home”
