English: An old map of Paris.
Maps are mounted on 30 double plates with neat lines and border. Includes index map and index. These maps are made up from Jaillot's 25 maps in his 1774 book "Recherches Critiques, Historiques et Topographiques Sur La Ville de Paris." (see our 10793.000 for the 1782 edition). In 1777 the 25 maps were trimmed and fitted together to first make one large map with a decorative border added (see the composite map 10792.037 and our 12431.103), and then in 1778 cut into 30 double page sheets for this atlas. We have never seen this kind of thing done before. The maps were literally cut up by Jaillot and assembled as paper collages to make both these derivative works. The maps are based on and expand from the work of Delagrive (see our 10172.000). The relation between these three publications and the process involved is detailed in Boutier 302 |
