Summary

[edit]
Description
English:
Jewish cemetery. In the eastern part of the city, near the railway line, is an irregular square plot of land. Its fence is partly a brick wall, partly concrete. In the building adjoining the NW corner of the cemetery, there is a rectangular, ground-floor, brick-paved, gable-roofed funeral home built on the street line, with a Holocaust memorial plaque on its wall. In the cemetery there is a Holocaust memorial and about 3000 tombstones, the main types of which are: a stone tablet with an arched closure, an obelisk, a 'broken column'. The earliest tombstones date from the second half of the eighteenth century. A synagogue also stood here until 1944. Rabbi Áron Dávid Deutsch is the most famous grave of the former orthodox cemetery. There is the tomb of Michel Gyarmathy (former artistic director of the world-famous Folies Bergere in Paris) The graves of several minor rabbis and their family members can also be found in this cemetery. Most of the tombstone texts are in Hebrew and Hungarian, but there are also tombstone inscriptions in Yiddish and German. - Temető Street, Balassagyarmat, Nógrád County, Hungary.
